A non-faceted polishing style with a smooth, domed top and a flat or slightly rounded back. Standard for opaque or asteristic stones — opals, moonstones, star sapphires, star rubies. The 'sugarloaf cabochon' (with a pointed dome) is the prized variant for Cartier vintage jewelry.
